University Essentials by a Life Science Student

Continuing the University Essentials series, today's post features the essentials by my friend who studies Life Science.

About her:

She's going to be starting year 3, which she finds to be simultaneously exciting and scary. She has a scholarship programme and this was her biggest motivation for submitting her daily temperature readings. Fun fact: Her compliance rate for the daily temperature readings was 97% (like what even?).

What is studying in your course like?

For Year 1 and 2 students, it's mostly exams and lab reports.

She didn't have that many assignments and projects, except for one or two modules. The longest lab session she has ever had lasted from 12pm to 6pm - which left me shooked. As she doesn't stay in hall, she wakes up at 6am for her 8am classes. On busier days, especially during recess week, she'll study in school until 9pm latest.

Study + School essentials:

She gave me a list of what she brings to school daily. Apart from the basics, like a wallet, phone and pencil case, she also brings these:

Laptop

She uses a laptop for classes and studying. She types out her notes on OneNote, which she claims is a "very smart" app because of its formatting and features. She's particular about how her notes look (*cough type one*), so typing it out on OneNote helps her organise her notes better before she decides to write them out. For her lab reports, she uses Pages.

For content-heavy modules, she likes to print out her notes. It's easier for her to read and annotate, rather than reading it on a digital screen.

A planner

"The planner helps me sort out my thoughts and things I need to do".

She prefers to write to help her conceptualise her thoughts. Her planner is from Muji, which she finds useful. On one side of the notebook, it provides the dates, while on the other, it includes grid paper which she uses to jot down her thoughts.

Additional stuff:

She brings two pairs of earphones to school. One of them is the wired Apple earphones and other is noise cancelling. She uses the noise-cancelling ones for her daily commute to and fro school.

Backpack or handbag?: "Depends on my outfit".

But, I see her using her shoulder bag more often.

Beauty Essentials

Morning Routine:

For her morning routine, she starts by cleansing with the Fancl BC Washing Cream, followed by toner, moisturiser and lastly, the Anessa Skincare Milk Sunscreen

Night-Time routine

To remove her makeup, she starts off with Micellar water followed by the same Fancl cleanser.  Currently, she is using another brand because she couldn't find the one she normally uses - which is the L'oreal Moisturising Micellar Water (for Sensitive Skin).

After cleansing, she applies the TCFS toner and Shiseido Ultimune. It's supposed to be a serum, but because the consistency is so thick, she doubles it up as a moisturiser. (She doesn't recommend it though, in case you're wondering). Lastly, she uses the TCFS Coconut Sugar Scrub Lip Balm. She finds this very moisturising. She really likes wearing lipsticks so this helps her, especially if she wants to wear a matte lipstick the next day.

On some nights, she'll exfoliate and wear a mask. But, she's usually too lazy to do so.

Skincare Essentials:

Fancl BC Facial Washing Cream

She's been a loyal fan of this cleanser since she was 13 years old. Though it's pricey, it is a worthy investment because a bottle lasts her for over 6 months.

Too Cool For School Rules of Mastic Facial Tonic

She bought this toner in Korea and she's almost halfway through it. It's her first toner she's ever used. It has no scent and it is lightweight - so much so that she describes it as "spraying water" on her face.

Laneige Water Bank Hydro Cream

Just like her facial cleanser, she's a loyal user to this moisturiser. It's not too heavy, and it's very moisturising. A little product goes a long way. When she uses this in the morning, it's not sticky and lasts under her makeup.

Even though they reformulated this cream, she still likes it. "It's just slightly thicker than the previous formula".

Makeup:

She does wear makeup to school and if her classes start at 8, she wakes up at 6 to get ready. For her makeup routine, she loves going for a natural look.

She starts off with a bit of primer, followed by concealer for her eyebags. Next, she does her brows, highlighter and blush. Lastly, lipstick. There are days where she'll wear mascara, but 98% of the time she doesn't.

Essentials:

NARS radiant creamy concealer.

Shade Honey

This has good coverage and it lasts pretty well. She recommends this if you really need to conceal your eyebags. However, the only downside for her is that it gets a bit thick and cakey, so it tends to crease.

Shu Uemura Eyebrow Pencil (Hard 9)

She uses this because her mom bought it for her. The first time she used it, she was confused because it felt weird. But, it works. For a natural finish, she blends it out with an Innisfree spoolie.

Her top 4 Lipsticks

NARS Audacious Lipstick

Shade: Jane

This is a coral-ish shade that has a satin finish. She dabs it on to give a natural finish. The only con is that it does not stay on as a long as a matte lipstick.

3CE Mood Recipe

Shade: 2108 Mirror-like

A light, but pretty and natural shade. Because of its ultra-matte finish, it's not the best for people with dry lips.

BBIA Last Rouge

Shade: #10 Romantically Brown

"I wear this on days I feel fancy. It's not a very natural colour".

She bought this when we were in JB (awh #throwback). This has a satin, creamy finish. The shade is brownish, like a dark rose.

Colorpop Velvet Blur Lipstick

Shade: mesmerised

"I feel like most of my guy friends wouldn't know this is lipstick".

It is a mauvy shade, which is not super obvious but also not the most natural-looking. It is kind of matte, but not as drying as the 3CE lipstick.

Blush

The two blushes that she uses the most are the Tarte Amazonian Blush and the Too Cool For School Jelly Blusher

For the Tarte Amazonian Blush, she has the shade paaarty. She finds it natural and pigmented. Moreover, it stays on pretty long. She owns the shade Rose Mousse for the TCFS Jelly Blusher. The jelly-like texture makes it harder to apply but she likes the natural finish that it gives when blended.

Currently, she uses the Zoeva Luxe Sheer Cheek Brush for the TCFS blush and the Shiseido Kabuki Cheek Brush for the Tarte Amazonian Blush.

That's it for her school essentials. Hope this was a fun read for you.
